Spring Choir Concert: "Songs of the Silver I cannot believe it is already time for graduation! It seems like just yesterday we posted our first Newsletter in August of 2021, ready to start an amazing year full of performances, community, and most importantly, music. Our BHS Choir singers have come a long way this year, and I am so proud of the hard work, dedication, and loyalty they've brought to our choral program to make this season a great success. Let me share with you a few highlights of our incredible 2021-22 season: 1. BHS Choir had 14 performances this year! To put this monumental achievement in context, last year BHS Choir had 6 performances, and the year before we had 4. Not only did we perform at 14 events, we performed extremely well everywhere we went. This is an outstanding achievement for BHS Choir, and I am so happy to celebrate our students' hard work that made these 14 performances possible! 2. BHS Choir received 2's & 3's on our UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Evaluation! This evaluation is scored on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being Superior and 5 being Below Adequate. I am very proud of these scores for our choir students this year, and looking forward to getting 1's and trophies next year! With these students and the dedication they bring to our BHS Choir program, the sky is the limit! 3. BHS Choir participated in 3 brand new events around Bastrop. These events include: Bastrop County Choral Festival, Movies in the Park, and Dia del Nino - Districtwide. Not only did we have the wonderful opportunity to perform at these incredible events, they called us and asked us to perform! I am so grateful that our hard work and loyalty to the BHS Choir program over the past few years has finally brought us to a place where these students are being asked to perform because of their incredible reputation as a choir! Congratulations BHS Choir on an amazing 2021-22 season! Now, as the year comes to a close, it is time to look ahead to the future of BHS Choir. It is my greatest joy to announce to you today that next year, we will no longer be BHS Choir, but BHS Choirs! Our incredible administrative and front-office team at BHS worked diligently to help us open up 2 sections of choir next year, and I am so pleased to announce that our hope for multiple choirs has come to fruition! Congratulations to the BHS Choral Program for this monumental achievement; I cannot wait to show you the growth of our program next year and introduce you to our new choir! Finally, I'd like to say thank you to all who attended the BHS Choir Banquet last Saturday, May 7th. We had an incredible time celebrating the amazing students in our program, looking back on this busy, busy season, and sending off the seniors as they prepare for graduation in a few weeks. I am so proud of our seniors, and cannot wait to see our Class of 2022 take the next steps on their journey! Congratulations Seniors; don't forget to come visit when you're in town! We have 1 concert left before Final Exams, Graduation, and Summer Vacation rise into view. I hope to see you there as we honor our graduating seniors, announce our 2022-23 Officer Board, and say goodbye for the summer. Attached is a list of Summer Choir Camps offered by local universities, as well as a flyer for a brand new choir camp offered in Austin that serves to be a more affordable option to our students. I would highly recommend our choir students attend a summer choir camp; they are incredibly fun and immersive, and give our students a few days to truly study music with their peers from around the state. If you have any questions about summer camps or need help selecting one, please let me know and I would be happy to help! Until then, I'll look forward to seeing you at our Spring Concert on Monday, May 23rd. UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Contest - UIL is in the air this spring, and BHS Choir was ready for the challenge! We traveled to Hays CISD Performing Arts Center in Kyle on Monday, March 7th, and performed for the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading contest that afternoon. Choirs participate in 2 separate events at UIL: the Concert portion, where choirs bring 3 known pieces for performance and are scored on their quality of tone, performance readiness, and general musicianship, and the Sight-Reading portion, where choirs are handed a brand new, unknown piece of choral music and are scored on how well they can read the piece with only 8 minutes to do so. Both portions are scored on a scale of 1 (best) to 5 (worst), and detailed comments sheets from each judge are submitted to the director for review. The judges scores are in, and I am very excited to announce that BHS Choir received 2's and 3's in this year's contest! This is an amazing step forward for our choir, and I am so very proud of our students' hard work and dedication paying dividends at this year's contest. Pre-UIL Concert & Sight-reading Choir February is here, and so is the start of a very busy BHS Choir season! From UIL competition preparations to recruitment tours, February is full of fun activities for our Bastrop High School Choir students!
When preparing for our Choir Tour to BMS this Friday, I asked some of our BHS Choir students to describe why others should join choir in 1 sentence. One theme carried through all of the responses I received: community. From creating a community of friends, to singing together and learning as a community, all answers revolved around the sense of community our students felt in choir. I was ecstatic to hear that our students were bonding together through music, and I started to reflect on the greater community we've built here. Our BHS Choir community not only includes our choir students, but the community we're building includes parents, grandparents, friends, siblings, and even neighbors! The BHS Choir community grows stronger every day, and it is parents, guardians, siblings, friends like you who make our community so more powerful. Thank you for supporting our BHS Choir singers, and helping us create this wonderful community of students, family, friends, and musicians. In this month's newsletter, we'll look ahead to the important events in November and December and share some ways you can help BHS Choir have a great end to the Fall Semester!
Since our Fall Choir Concert, BHS Choir has been working to prepare for the challenging Spring 2022 semester. With UIL Concert & Sight-Reading as well as other UIL competitions looming over the horizon, BHS Choir has started working hard on our sight-reading and music theory skills so that we can become the best choir we can be! Every day BHS Choir students work through sight-reading exercises, Holiday concert repertoire, and music for extracurricular events (like the Gold Out Game!) On top of all of this hard work, our BHS Choir students are also working on recruitment efforts for the Bastrop Middle School and Intermediate School Choirs! One of the most important components of recruiting from younger schools is building relationships, and BHS Choir is creating a new recruitment video that will help build relationships with the younger singers even from the TV screen! The BISD Character Trait for October was responsibility. At BHS Choir, not only do our singers have a responsibility to try their best each and every day, but they also have a responsibility to work hard for each other. With all of the after school rehearsals, extracurricular events, and performances coming up in the next month, BHS Choir singers need to rely on each other for success in the ensemble. We foster that responsibility each and every day in the way we communicate with each other, interact with each other in and out of Choir class, and especially in how we sing with each other. Students have the opportunity to support each other through their singing, and as they do, the choir gets stronger with every passing day. BHS Choir has taken responsibility for their success, and I cannot wait for you to see the fruits of their labor at our next concert! Kindly, Ms. Davis, Director REMINDERS: - Due to an error in the original BHS Choir calendar, a new after-school rehearsal has been added to the schedule! This rehearsal will be held on Tuesday, November 2nd from 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM in the Choir Room. - If you would like to donate water or snacks for the BHS Choir after school rehearsals, please let Ms. Davis know at [email protected]. Our 1st Choir concert of the season. On Tuesday, October 5th, students will share with you their hard work and passion for singing through a brilliant program of music on the theme "Homeward Bound".
Over the past few weeks, the BHS Choir singers have talked quite a bit about what "home" means to them. Our concert tells the story of someone traveling the world until they finally feel the call to come home; pieces like "Jambo" and "Riversong" express how our traveler wants to run free, while pieces like "Wayfaring Stranger" and the title piece "Homeward Bound" express that desire in all of us to return to our "home". The BISD character trait for October is RESPONSIBILITY, and I believe that it is the musician's responsibility to tell the story of the music they perform. Our students have been working so hard to tell these stories, and I hope you can join us Tuesday night to hear them tell the story of Homeward Bound. Please see below for upcoming dates, celebrations, and reminders for the month of October. Thank you for supporting our BHS Choir singers each and every day as they continue doing what they love most: making music together. I look forward to seeing you Tuesday night! We have a very busy September schedule, full of singing, community-building, and performing. This newsletter contains a full calendar of September events at the end of the post, including some dates to look forward to in October.
This month, the BISD character focus is HONESTY. As a choir, we are building honesty by connecting with our classmates, communicating with Ms. Davis and fellow singers, and creating an atmosphere of positivity and acceptance. That honesty leads to more meaningful relationships with peers, stronger sense of community in choir, and a wonderful beauty of sound! A choir who sings together openly and honestly has a certain beauty of tone that cannot be found anywhere else, and that is the honesty we are striving for during the month of September! I am so excited for all of the wonderful opportunities for our BHS Choir singers this month, and I hope you are getting excited too! We have a lot of work ahead of us, but that work with be balanced with fun, team-building, and most importantly - honesty. One of the BHS Choir goals for this year is "Foster Community", and we are especially excited to start this goal when we come back to school. Not only will we be welcoming new members to the BHS Choir community, but we will also be welcoming back our online learning from the 2020-21 school year! We have some great events and concerts planned for this 2021-22 school year, and can't wait to share these experiences as a BHS Choir community.
Before the school year starts, here are a few reminders: 1. BHS Choir School Supplies Many of the supplies for choir at Bastrop High School are provided by Ms. Davis and the school, including all music for concerts and special events. However, there are 2 items on the BHS Choir supply list: Black 3-ring Binder (1/2 inch binder recommended) 3 Pencils (lead or mechanical pencils; no pens!) 2. Location of BHS Choir Room Last year, we moved into our new Choir Room! Our BHS Choir class, originally held in the 1600 hall on the Genesis High School campus, is now located in Room 901 on the BHS main campus. Room 901 is the front-most portable located right next to Christian's Closet. Click on this link to see a map of the BHS campus. 3. Resources on BHS Choir website Students will receive the BHS Choir Syllabus on the 1st day of school, but parents and family also have access to the 2021-22 syllabus through the BHS Choir website! Visit bastrophschoir.weebly.com and look under the "Resources" tab to find helpful information and documents for both students and parents! You can also find the 2021-22 Concert Season, with dates and locations for all BHS Choir concerts this year, under the "Calendar" tab. (You can also find the Monthly Newsletter and subscribe under the "Media" tab!) This year will be unlike any other year, and I am so excited for the singing we'll do, the progress we'll make, and the friendships that will grow among the BHS Choir singers! Enjoy your last 2 weeks of summer, and I'll see your students on August 17th! Kindly, Ms. Davis, Director A new look for BHS Choir!Hello! I hope you are enjoying the summer sun as we start the second half of summer vacation! Over this past year, we have brainstormed ways to make the BHS Choir experience better for students and for their families, and I am excited to announce some new projects that will make our BHS Choir experience better than ever! One of the main goals was to increase awareness to the BHS Choir program, both on and off campus. With that in mind, we developed new resources that will help increase our online presence, as well as create new opportunities for our BHS Choir families to be even more involved and informed. Here are some of the projects we've been working on this summer: 1. BHS Choir Website Our most exciting news this month: we have created a Bastrop High School Choir website! This website will be the central location for information & updates on BHS, resources for students and parents, as well as concert programs and dates. Take a look through our brand new webpage and find all kinds of ways to interact and support the Bastrop High School Choir! 2. "Bastrop High School Choir" Youtube Channel One of the best ways to support BHS Choir is to come to our concerts! But sometimes, not everyone is able to come in-person to our performances. We've created the BHS Choir Youtube Channel to help keep you and your family connected to BHS Choir, even if you can't make the concert! Videos of our performances will be uploaded after the live concert, and be available on our Youtube Channel for you to share with loved ones, extended family, and friends! 3. "Bastrop High School Choir" Facebook Page Although BHS Choir has been on Instagram since the Fall of 2020, we are now excited to announce you can also find us on Facebook! Facebook is a great way we can share concerts, events, and snapshots with BHS Choir families online. Search "Bastrop High School Choir" on Facebook to find our brand new Facebook page, and don't forget to hit "Like"! Make sure to visit, "like", and subscribe to our new platforms this month as we countdown our summer days! Thank you for supporting Bastrop High School Choir, and enjoy this sunny month of July! Kindly, Ms. Davis, Director |
